Megan McGarvey is currently studying Level 2 in Team Leading through Rutledge Training while working for the Waterfoot Hotel under the ApprenticeshipsNI programme.

Apprenticeships are great for people who are looking for a career change while still learning. She was working in a contact centre and wanted a career change and was recommended the Level 2 Team Leading apprenticeship by her manager in the Waterfoot Hotel.

Megan is working hard on her Level 2 and is looking forward to studying her Level 3 afterwards.

Apprenticeships are available for everyone regardless of what you previous qualifications are. If you did not pass your GCSE Maths or English you can study top up courses during your qualifications with Rutledge Training while earning money from your job at the same time.

Are Apprenticeships Full Time?

Yes the apprenticeships on offer from Rutledge Training are full time. Most of your week will be in your work placement on whatever shifts they work on.  You will have to attend classes in your local Rutledge branch a few days each month.

Which apprenticeships are most in demand?

Recently we have found that the following sectors are popular with our students and have the largest number of opportunities/vacancies:

  • Construction
  • Engineering
  • Mechanic
  • Electrician
  • Healthcare
  • Childcare
  • Hospitality
  • Hair & Beauty

These are the most popular apprenticeships currently, however financial sectors and offices do offer them as well.  If you are interested or know someone who is between the ages of 16-24 and would like to find out more please contact Rutledge Training using the contact form below or give us a call on 028 7035 2434.

Are Apprenticeships Paid?

Yes, the employer will pay you a wage so you have the ability to learn while you earn.

What levels of study are there with apprenticeships?

There are various levels on a lot of the apprenticeships on offer from Rutledge. Level 2 and 3 would be common for most types but we do offer up to Level 5 for those on a Healthcare apprenticeship.

When are apprenticeships available?

The great thing about apprenticeships is that you do not need to wait until the typical enrolment time of September. You can start your 52 week period anytime during the year.

Can apprenticeships lead to university?

Yes you can study courses that are equivalent to University level or at the level required should you desire to gain entry to University.

What is my next step with apprenticeships?

To take part in the ApprenticeshipsNI programme you need to:

  • Have reached the minimum school leaving age in Northern Ireland (16 years+).
  • Be employed or be about to take up paid employment in Northern Ireland (Rutledge can help you find a job placement if you do not have one already).
  • Be working a minimum of 21 hours per week on a permanent contract.
  • Meet all of the entry requirements of your chosen apprenticeship (for example some apprenticeships will require you to have GCSEs).
  • Meet a number of eligibility considerations, for example if you are a non-EU national or a public sector employee, of if you have previously achieved a recognised vocational qualification.

You may need to meet other eligibility considerations, for example you may not be eligible if you’re a non-EU national, a public sector worker or already have a recognised vocational qualification.  If you’re 25 years an over, there are restrictions on the type of apprenticeship with funding available.
